FireEye Inc. describes an iOS security problem, with "severe security consequences", which the company told Apple about back in July:

Masque Attack: All Your iOS Apps Belong to Us

In July 2014, FireEye mobile security researchers have discovered that an iOS app installed using enterprise/ad-hoc provisioning could replace another genuine app installed through the App Store, as long as both apps used the same bundle identifier. This in-house app may display an arbitrary title (like "New Flappy Bird") that lures the user to install it, but the app can replace another genuine app after installation. All apps can be replaced except iOS preinstalled apps, such as Mobile Safari. This vulnerability exists because iOS doesn't enforce matching certificates for apps with the same bundle identifier. We verified this vulnerability on iOS 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 8.0, 8.1 and 8.1.1 beta, for both jailbroken and non-jailbroken devices. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability both through wireless networks and USB. We named this attack "Masque Attack," and have created a demo video here.

We have notified Apple about this vulnerability on July 26. Recently Claud Xiao discovered the "WireLurker" malware. After looking into WireLurker, we found that it started to utilize a limited form of Masque Attacks to attack iOS devices through USB. Masque Attacks can pose much bigger threats than WireLurker. Masque Attacks can replace authentic apps, such as banking and email apps, using attacker's malware through the Internet. That means the attacker can steal user's banking credentials by replacing an authentic banking app with an malware that has identical UI. Surprisingly, the malware can even access the original app's local data, which wasn't removed when the original app was replaced. These data may contain cached emails, or even login-tokens which the malware can use to log into the user's account directly.

We have seen proofs that this issue started to circulate. In this situation, we consider it urgent to let the public know, since there could be existing attacks that haven't been found by security vendors. We are also sharing mitigation measures to help iOS users better protect themselves.

The latest version brings multiple improvements, with Yosemite compatibility. SpamSieve 2.9.17 is priced at $30 for Mac OS X 10.6 and up with a free trial available. (Older versions support Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.5.)

"Works with Apple Mail under Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. It's easiest if you update to SpamSieve 2.9.17 before updating to Mac OS X 10.10. In any case, if you don't see the SpamSieve commands in Apple Mail's Message menu, be sure to choose Install Apple Mail Plug-In from the SpamSieve menu. Otherwise, with the SpamSieve plug-in not installed, Mail will move good messages to the spam mailbox without consulting SpamSieve."

TRIM Enabler is an app from Oskar Groth (Cindori Software AB) that optimizes performance and longevity of SSDs (solid-state drives) by enabling TRIM support that allows OS X to signal SSD firmware when files have been deleted, in order to better manage free space, reducing write wear and improving write performance. (See also this discussion in our reader reports section.) The latest release improves OS X 10.10 Yosemite compatibility.
Trim Enabler 3.3 is available in a free version for OS X 10.7 and later. A "Pro" version, priced at $10, adds SMART monitoring, benchmarking and "OS X tweaks that can further improve performance". (Trim Enabler 2.2 is available as a free download for Mac OS X 10.6: TrimEnabler_old.dmg.)

Autothysis is a set of secure SSD storage products announced for release later this year by SecureDrives (Cautela Technology Sp. z o.o). Based on "reverse engineering data recovery techniques", the devices offer unique remote control and data destruction capabilities via various triggers.
Autothysis128s, priced at £1,027, is a 2.5-inch, 3Gbps SATA drive (which can also be used via USB 3) with hardware self-encryption (256-bit AES CBC) and "computer-independent, 2-factor authentication via smartphone."

The Smartphone application is the command centre for the Drive and allows easy access to all configuration options. It enables the user to quickly change the level of security depending on the users own security risk landscape. You can assign more than one Smartphone to a Drive. In the event of loss or theft of the Smartphone, the Drive can be assign via Bluetooth to another Smartphone as long as the PIN code is known.

Equipped with a built-in 3G radio the device can be triggered to physical self-destruction via user-defied SMS 'kill message', opening of the anti-tamper case, removal from the host PC, PIN code retries being exceeded, or low internal battery level.

The drive has built in GSM with the capability of physical data destruction on demand. It is the first SSD Drive in the world to offer remote data destruction of the NAND Flash storage within the Drive. This patented technology is designed to fragment the NAND Flash along with the security controller to impede any data recovery technique that might be applied in an attempt to gain access to the encrypted data. No amount of computer processing power will help if a NAND Flash can't be mounted onto a PCB.
